New Travel Requirements for Americans in 2025 in UK

As you prepare to join us on our upcoming tours this year, such as The Culinary History and Delights of ScotlandArts & Crafts Gardens and Houses in Wales, William Morris and His Influence or The Arts and Crafts in Ireland, it is important to be aware of new travel requirements for Americans traveling to the U.K. starting in 2025. These new rules could impact your travel plans, so we encourage you to review these requirements carefully to ensure a smooth and delightful experience.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA): What You Need to Know

Effective January 8, 2025, Americans visiting the U.K. will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This requirement also applies to passengers transiting through the U.K.

Key details about the ETA:

  • The ETA will be electronically linked to the traveller’s passport.
  • It will remain valid for two years or until the traveler’s passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • Starting April 2025, all visitors who do not need a visa, including eligible Europeans, will require an ETA to travel to the U.K. Eligible Europeans can apply starting March 5, 2025, and will need an ETA from April 2, 2025.

Cost and Duration

  • Cost: The ETA costs £10 (approximately $13 USD).
  • Duration: The ETA permits multiple journeys to the U.K. for stays of up to six months at a time during the two-year validity period.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted through the official Gov.UK website to avoid potential scams. Ensure you apply well in advance of your departure date to prevent delays.

For official guidance and resources, the U.K. Home Office provides a Partner Pack with fact sheets and assets to help travelers understand the requirements. You can download these resources directly from their website.

Important Note: Beware of fraudulent websites. Only use the official government website to apply. If you suspect you’ve encountered an immigration scam, report it through the official channels: Report visa and immigration scams.

How to Prepare for Your Trip

  • Apply Early: Submit your ETA application well in advance of your travel date. Processing times may take up to three business days, so plan accordingly.
  • Use Official Resources: Ensure you use the official U.K. government website to apply and access the Partner Pack for further guidance.
  • Plan Ahead: With these updated requirements, don’t wait until the last minute to organize your travel documents. Preparing ahead will ensure a seamless journey.
